Two documents from the Black Hawk War, a receipt for equipment and a list of property used by the 27th Regiment and returned by Capt. Stephenson. Letters discuss his campaign and election to legislature, Democratic politics, the internal improvements program (especially the Ill. Central Railroad), business at the land office in Galena and social life in Galena. Includes letters from Richard M. Young, George Forquer, William L. May, Elias K. Kane, Lucius Lyon and others important in politics of the time. A May 23, 1837 letter from John Tierney warns Stephenson of the rumors re: his misconduct. Statement signed by A.G.S. Wight defending Stephenson against the charges. 1856 letter re: claim against Stephenson's estate.

Son of Col. Benjamin Stephenson, he moved to Galena, Ill. in 1828 then served in the Black Hawk War, Jo Daviess County Clerk and as Senator in the Illinois legislature elected in 1834 and was a member of the Internal Improvements Commission. He was also named Register of Lands at Galena and Chicago. In 1838 he was investigated for "defalcation" or embezzling. He died that same year from tuberculosis.
